After 40 years of neglect in 2002 a movie, “Cidade de Deus” directed by Fernando Mireilles puts this community in all media worldwide. The film portrays the seedier side of the favela , violence , crime , death and fear.
City of God is one of the most politicized and organized slums . It is full of color, life, wealth, strength, energy, creativity… In fact, the favelas are an important creative focus in Brazil, although the townspeople perhaps not able to understand…
Peacemaking begins in 2003 with command of armed police who enter in the favela repeatedly to remove families narcos. But this only aggravated the problem. Later comes the UPPS ( Social Pacifying Police Unit ), dedicated to ensuring safety in the streets, not eliminate traffickers. The street violence descended and the police begin to strengthen ties with the population. Drug trafficking hides, as in any other city. Drug addicts leave the favela and installed nearby, families can finally walk the streets of their neighborhood.
The favelas are located throughout the areas with the best views of the city, the highest class is surrounded by the lowest class. The Olympics and the Soccer World Cup , always require their candidates top two premises: Transportation and Safety.
The Pacification causes an exodus of population from pacified favelas to non pacified. As soon as the UPP comes, they regulate and start charging electricity and water, and there are many families who can not afford it.
We visit this community to show their beauty, their drama and their struggle to survive
